Elz has always felt a strong love for music and dancing as long as she could remember. When she was 5 years old she got a pink Sony boombox and a Michael Jackson "Thiller" tape and it changed her life forever. That funky sound reached her somewhere inside and she has been hooked ever since. She soon learned the piano would sing and make up song for hours. Later on she would make up dances and put on shows for her family and neighbors. She then started hearing freestyle on the radio and she fell in love with the oldchool break beat sound. She would make tons of mixtapes with her favorite songs taped off the radio and would dance for hours in her room. When she got into Highschool music was her escape. She loved to perform in musicals and the jazz band. The music always made her happy.
In 1997 after listening to a "Loose Caboose" mix tape by DJ Dan that her sister Kate had given her, she wanted to hear more of this new music and so she started going to underground dance parties in San Francisco and Oakland. After watching DJ Dan, Tony, Jeno, Terry Mullan, Charles Feelgood, Barry Weaver, Tracy, Traxx, Joey Mazzola, Kwashi, Mark Farina, DJ Icey, and especially Donald Glaude move the crowd in amazing ways, it inspired her to create her own unique blend of funky booty shaking pumping house, funky bumping techno and funky old school electro break beats. But mostly she wanted to make other people dance and have a good time like those djs had made her feel. One day while going to a record shop to get flyers for upcoming parties she had extra time so decided to listen to some records. She bought five records (some trance, house, breaks, and techno) and started to mess around on her boyfriend's (at the time) Numark turntables for fun and instantly feel in love. Her prior knowledge of music helped her understand mixing easily and so she took to DJing naturally. She played her first house party that weekend after teaching her self how to mix together her new records. She then decided that playing on someone else's tables wasn't enough to feed her new found addiction so she scraped up enough money for one Technic 1200 turntable and a radio shack mixer. She would mix to the radio, tapes, CDs, or anything else she could get her hands on. Six months later she got another Technic 1200 and a new Vestex 05pro mixer from her grandma, and mom for her birthday. She practiced every day and quickly became a funky bass vinyl junkie. Mixing gave her a way to express herself in a raw way and if she ever felt sad or depressed the music was an outlet for her pain.
Eight months after she first touched a pair of turntables, she got booked to play at X.O.X. 2 at the infamous 2nd and Jackson. She opened up in the small room and it was a great honor for her to be spinning at the same party as Frankie Bones, Jim Hopkins, Tony, Simon, Rinse, Flux, and more. She then began spinning regularly at a free Sunday afternoon outdoor party called Beatdown Sundaze and helped them throw Bass Freakers 1 & 2.
She formed Peak Productions in 1999 to throw events: High with Erik Brown and Joe Lanzon; Free (a free outdoor party); Beyond with Jesse Saunders, Joey Mazzola, Gianni, and Morgan; BassFunk with Barry Weaver, Simply Jeff, Tracy, and Ron Reeser; and The GetDown with DRC, Joey Mazzola, Ron Reeser, Denise and Tom Slik. These parties were thrown to bring the old school funky house and breaks vibe back to the SF scence, as well as to promote not so well known SF talented local DJs.
